A truck (HGV) mechanic is a highly sought-after profession on the job market – both in Poland and across Europe. High responsibility, specialist knowledge and the ability to work with large vehicles make truck mechanics a profession for people with a passion for the motor industry and a readiness to keep improving their skills. But where can you get the right education?

First-level vocational school – the first step into the trade

The basic route to becoming a truck mechanic is to complete a first-level vocational school (szkoła branżowa I stopnia, formerly the basic vocational school). At such schools you can choose the “motor vehicle mechanic” course, where students learn both the theory and practice of repairing various types of vehicles, including trucks.

During their studies, students gain knowledge of:

  • motor vehicle construction,
  • fault diagnostics,
  • repairing mechanical, electrical and electronic systems,
  • using modern tools and diagnostic equipment.

As part of work placements, there is an opportunity to work in workshops specialising in servicing trucks and trailers.

Automotive technical school – more theory, wider opportunities

Another option is to complete an automotive technical school (technikum) on the motor vehicle technician course. Education at a technical school lasts four or five years and ends with the secondary school leaving exam (matura) and a vocational exam. Graduates have broader competences, so they can not only work as mechanics but also take on roles as vehicle inspectors or workshop managers.

At a technical school, students learn, among other things:

  • advanced diagnostics of electronic systems,
  • accident repair technology,
  • operating computerised fleet management systems.

Qualification courses for adults

For adults who want to gain truck mechanic qualifications quickly, there are also qualification courses run by vocational schools, continuing education centres and private training companies. These courses often last a few months and focus on hands-on learning of the trade.

Where should you look for a school?

If you are from Lublin or the surrounding area, it is worth considering schools and education centres specialising in training motor mechanics, which offer both traditional education programmes and vocational courses. Work placements can be done at professional truck services such as Serwis Mobilny TIR – Henryk Gorajek in Lublin, gaining experience under the guidance of experienced professionals.

Summary:
To become a truck mechanic, the best option is to complete a first-level vocational school or an automotive technical school. Qualification courses are also available for adults. Gaining the right education and work experience opens the way to stable, well-paid work in the automotive industry.
