Road haulage is an industry where time is money. A truck breakdown on the road can mean delays, contractual penalties and even the loss of a contract. That is why a mobile truck service is often the only rescue – it comes to the scene, diagnoses the problem and carries out the repair without the vehicle having to be towed to a fixed workshop.
But to work quickly and effectively, a mobile mechanic has to be equipped with the right set of tools. Below you will find a list of the most important equipment in a mobile truck workshop.
1. Basic mechanical tools
No repair is possible without them. A mobile workshop should carry:
- Open-ended and ring spanners – in the full range of sizes, including long versions.
- Torque wrenches – for tightening bolts precisely to the manufacturer’s specifications.
- Ratchets, sockets and extensions – a 1/4″, 3/8″ and 1/2″ set with impact sockets.
- Screwdrivers and bits – flat, Phillips and Torx, in various lengths.
- Hammers and chisels – for jobs that require more force.
2. Pneumatic and electric tools
On trucks, components are larger and bolts are tightened harder than on passenger cars. It is worth having:
- A pneumatic or cordless impact wrench – at least 1,500–2,000 Nm of torque.
- An air compressor – mobile, with enough output to run the impact wrench and inflate truck tyres.
- An angle grinder – for cutting and cleaning components.
- A drill/driver – with a full set of drill bits for metal and wood.
3. Computer diagnostics
Modern trucks are complex vehicles with electronics that control almost every component. A mobile truck service must have:
- An OBD/EOBD diagnostic tester for trucks – supporting makes such as Scania, MAN, Volvo, DAF, Mercedes-Benz and Iveco.
- A service laptop or tablet – rugged enough for field work.
- Service software – for reading and clearing fault codes, calibration and programming modules.
4. Equipment for emergency roadside repairs
Sometimes you have to act immediately, with no chance to wait for spare parts:
- An emergency tyre repair kit – plugs, patches, adhesives.
- Hydraulic jacks (trolley jacks) – with a lifting capacity of at least 20–30 tonnes.
- Ratchet straps and chains – to secure components during the repair.
- Jump leads and a booster – to start a vehicle with a flat battery.
5. Health & safety equipment and extra accessories
Safety when working at the roadside is essential:
- Hi-vis vests, traffic cones, LED warning lights – for visibility.
- Work gloves and safety glasses – to protect hands and eyes.
- A fire extinguisher – mandatory in every vehicle.
- A head torch and LED work light – for working at night and in difficult conditions.
Summary
A professional mobile truck workshop is not just a service van, but a fully equipped repair centre in the field. Having the right tools shortens truck downtime, reduces costs and increases customer satisfaction.
If you run a haulage company or a mobile truck service, remember: investing in good tools is investing in reliability and customer trust.
