Modern trucks are becoming increasingly technologically advanced. Emission reduction systems such as SCR, DPF and AdBlue systems play a key role in meeting environmental standards. Unfortunately, their complex design means they can be prone to failure and require specialist servicing. We recently dealt with just such a case in our workshop on a DAF truck.
The reported problem
The driver came to us because his vehicle was showing worrying symptoms:
- the exhaust aftertreatment warning lights had come on,
- the vehicle had lost power,
- the system had gone into limp mode, making it difficult to keep driving.
A situation like this is very troublesome for a haulage company – it means downtime and the risk of not delivering the load on time.
Thorough diagnosis
The first step was a comprehensive computer diagnosis. This allowed us to quickly narrow down the search and check which part of the system was not working properly. We then carried out mechanical tests and checked the individual components.
It turned out that the problem lay in the exhaust aftertreatment system, which was not operating within factory parameters.
Step-by-step repair
Once the fault had been located, we started the repair work. The process included:
- removing and checking the system components,
- replacing faulty parts,
- cleaning and checking the remaining components,
- recalibration and final tests.
Thanks to careful work and the right equipment, we were able to restore the vehicle to full working order. After the work was completed, the DAF truck was ready to go back into service and the driver could safely get back on the road.
The most common exhaust aftertreatment faults
Based on our experience, there are several typical faults:
- a blocked DPF,
- AdBlue system problems,
- faulty NOx sensors,
- pump and valve failures.
Regular checks and servicing help you avoid more serious damage and high repair costs.
How to look after your exhaust aftertreatment system
- Use high-quality AdBlue,
- Don’t ignore warning lights,
- Have computer diagnostics carried out regularly,
- Have inspections done at professional workshops.
Summary
Exhaust aftertreatment failure is a common problem in modern trucks, but a fast diagnosis and expert repair can prevent long periods of downtime. Our DAF truck case shows that the right approach and experienced mechanics guarantee an effective solution.
